Amber Stark Using Second Chance at College to Become Nurse

Amber Stark NPRC

We are #NPRCProud to highlight transfer student Amber Stark as part of #NationalTransferStudentWeek. Her long-term goal is to become a registered nurse (RN), and she’s taking her first step by completing her general education courses at NPRC before heading to Pitt-Titusville to complete their Associate of Science in Nursing.

Stark has worked in healthcare for nearly 16 years and recently decided she was ready to take the next step toward becoming a registered nurse. She is currently working full-time as a Patient Care Technician (PCT) at a local hospital in the telemetry unit and is enrolled at NPRC part-time. For years, she was intimidated by the thought of returning to school, but now that she is back in college, she’s excelling and is on her way to accomplishing her educational goals.

“My experience with NPRC has been amazing,” noted Stark. “My advisor checks in with me and helps me register for classes each semester. The College is great for someone like me who is working full-time, raising a daughter, and has time to go to school part-time. If anyone is looking into attending NPRC, I think it’s also important for people to know how great the instructors and staff are.”

During her time at NPRC, she has relied on her advisor, Laurel Lucas, and Assistant Director of Financial Aid Kim Boyer. Both women have aided Stark in different ways, from scheduling courses and coordinating her schedule to ensuring she has all her financial commitments met to help pay for her school.

Stark also has a strong support system in her personal life. Her co-workers are part of that support system, as they want to see her grow in her careerfor both her own and her family’s future. Her support system at home is also strong. and includes her partner and daughter, who are proud of the work she is putting in to accomplish a goal she has had for many years. “My family always tells me how proud they are for keeping my grades up and for making the Dean’s List this summer. My daughter shares it often with me that she is proud of me. My partner is also a big supporter and helps with my daughter so I can complete my classwork done. They also remind they’re proud of me and happy for me in every little accomplishment, even if it’s just a good grade on one assignment or exam.”

Northern Pennsylvania Regional College continues provide opportunities for those in a variety of life circumstances, including transfer students and those who need a second chance at earning a certificate or degree.
