Courtney Abrahamson

Courtney Abrahamson recently completed the emergency medical technician (EMT) program at Northern Pennsylvania Regional College (NPRC) and passed her national registry exam to become a certified EMT. In addition to her full-time role with Dauch Corporation, she is also employed part-time by the St. Marys Area Ambulance Service, Inc. and Fox Township Ambulance Associates.

“I was raised to give back to the community,” shared Abrahamson. “My boyfriend is an EMT and seeing the impact he was making was the push I needed to pursue it. While taking the course, I was able to ride along, use my CPR certification, and become certified in driving the ambulance. But now, instead of assisting in these ways, I can fully give back now that I’m certified. I take a lot of pride in accomplishing this and honestly, I cried when I got the news I passed. I was so happy and grateful my hard work paid off, and I could continue helping people in need on oftentimes one of their worst days.”

Abrahamson’ EMT course was offered through the College’s new hybrid format, which allows students to attend lectures remotely and access recordings. For clinical and lab work, students attend in-person sessions at approved locations close to them. Abrahamson was able to attend sessions in the evenings and on weekends, which worked well with her full-time job. “The flexibility is one of the best parts of the program. I didn’t have to travel much or far but I was still able to accomplish everything needed to pass. I’m also very grateful to EMS West for paying for textbooks and to the Fox Township Ambulance for reimbursing me for passing the course and national registry.”

She also enjoyed learning from instructors Dave Pelachik and Breanna Ullman, who were supportive and knowledgeable throughout the several-month program. Outside of the classroom, she appreciated the support she received from her mom, brother, and both ambulance companies. With their encouragement and her own determination, she completed the course and is now serving her community as an EMT. “Though the course is flexible, people should know they need to be serious and motivated to be successful. I worked hard to accomplish this, and it takes a special person who is driven and strong to be successful. I’m thankful I get to serve Elk County now.”
